Alfalfa Electric Cooperative proudly sponsored two outstanding student delegates — Katelee Martin and Jayla Moore to attend the 48th annual Cooperative Youth Leadership Camp (CYLC) held July 11-17 near scenic Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The camp brought together 77 high school students from across Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado and Wyoming. Sponsored by 45 cooperatives, the weeklong event was designed to equip future leaders with a deeper understanding of the cooperative model while building lifelong leadership skills. Katelee and Jayla were selected to represent Alfalfa Electric based on their exceptional academic records, leadership potential, involvement in extracurricular activities, and character. As part of the selection process, students submitted a short video explaining how one of the seven cooperative principles influences their daily lives — a challenge that both young women met with creativity and insight. During the camp, students participated in a hands-on simulation of cooperative business operations. They created and managed a mock candy cooperative, electing a board of directors, hiring a general manager, forming committees, and holding daily membership meetings. In a standout moment, Katelee was elected to serve as the 2025 CYLC general manager, a role that reflects the trust and respect she earned from her peers. Beyond the business experience, campers attended workshops focused on leadership development, conflict resolution, and co-op career opportunities. They also enjoyed unique learning experiences, such as electric safety demonstrations by linemen, a live raptor show from HawkQuest, and an educational tour of the Craig Power Station. Of course, CYLC wasn’t all work and no play. Katelee, Jayla and their fellow delegates rafted the Colorado River, rode the gondola to the top of Mount Werner, explored downtown Steamboat Springs, and enjoyed swimming, volleyball, a talent show and a final-night dance. Through it all, the students built friendships, gained confidence, and left with a greater appreciation for the cooperative spirit.
