Alfalfa Electric Cooperative Rates
Effective January 1, 2026
As a not-for-profit, member-owned electric cooperative, Alfalfa Electric’s rates are set to fairly reflect the cost of providing reliable power to our members across northwest Oklahoma and south-central Kansas. Our rates are reviewed and approved by the Alfalfa Electric Cooperative Board of Trustees and authorized under Oklahoma Statute 17 OS 158.27.
These updated rates become effective January 1, 2026, replacing the previous rate schedule from September 1, 2023.
Why Are Rates Changing?
At Alfalfa Electric Cooperative, we are committed to providing safe, reliable, and affordable electricity to our members across northwest Oklahoma and south-central Kansas. Because we operate on a not-for-profit basis, every dollar collected goes directly toward maintaining and improving the electric system that serves our members.
After a thorough review, our Board of Trustees approved updated rates effective January 1, 2026. This adjustment was necessary to keep pace with rising costs in power generation, transmission, and infrastructure while continuing to invest in reliability, safety, and long-term system improvements.
Key factors driving the rate change include:
Increased wholesale power costs from our power supplier, Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC).
Aging infrastructure requiring replacement and modernization to maintain dependable service.
Higher material, equipment, and labor costs due to inflation and supply chain challenges.
Investments in technology and system upgrades that improve efficiency and response time for outages.
Even with these changes, Alfalfa Electric’s rates remain competitive with other regional providers and reflect our ongoing commitment to deliver value and reliability to the members we serve.
How Rates Are Set
Rates charged to Alfalfa Electric Cooperative (AEC) members are determined by several key factors. The rate per kilowatt-hour (kWh) can vary depending on:
The type of account (residential, farm and ranch, commercial, or large power)
Seasonal usage
Demand
The primary driver in setting AEC’s rates is the cost of wholesale power purchased from our power supplier, Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC). WFEC generates and transmits power using a diverse mix of energy resources, including natural gas, wind, solar, and other sources, ensuring reliability for our members across Oklahoma and Kansas.
AEC’s rates are structured to fairly distribute the cost of providing electricity while maintaining the cooperative’s financial health and reinvesting in our system.
AEC’s Main Charges Include:
Monthly Customer Charge: A fixed charge that covers the non-energy costs of providing electric service, including metering, billing, and maintaining local infrastructure.
Energy (Kilowatt-hour or kWh) Charge: This charge recovers the cooperative’s cost of purchasing power from WFEC and delivering it safely to members’ homes and businesses.
Demand Charge (for applicable accounts): A charge based on the highest electric load (measured in kilowatts, or kW) used during a billing period. This fee helps AEC recover the costs incurred when members use large amounts of power at one time, reflecting the cooperative’s wholesale power demand costs.
AEC continually monitors operating expenses and wholesale power markets to ensure our rates remain fair, competitive, and reflective of the true cost of service.
Residential Members
Alfalfa Electric Cooperative’s new residential rates remain among the most affordable in the region and continue to reflect our mission of providing reliable, cost-based power to our members — not profits to shareholders.
Beginning January 1, 2026, residential members will see a modest increase averaging about:

Even with this adjustment, Alfalfa Electric’s residential rates remain highly competitive when compared to other electric providers across Oklahoma and Kansas, ensuring our members continue to receive exceptional value and dependable service.
Material costs have increased an average of 40% in recent years, impacting the expense of maintaining and upgrading critical infrastructure.
AEC has experienced a steady decline in energy use since 2016, meaning the cost to operate the system is spread across fewer kilowatt-hours sold.
This marks only the second rate adjustment in 13 years, a reflection of AEC’s strong cost management and commitment to keeping electricity affordable.
For the average residential member, the adjustment equals just a few extra dollars per month, or roughly $0.24 per day based on typical household usage.
Even after the increase, AEC members will continue to pay some of the lowest electric rates in Oklahoma and well below national averages:

General Provisions
Sales Taxes: Applied as required by state or local authorities.
Franchise Payments: Collected and remitted in accordance with valid franchise agreements.
Billing: Monthly bills are due 10 days after mailing.
Late and Service Fees: Penalty and late fee 6.5% plus $10 on the 15th of the month. Disconnect/reconnect $50 during regular hours, $100 after hours. Returned check $25 total. 48-hour notice posting $25.
Power Cost Adjustment (PCA): Monthly adjustment based on the cost of wholesale power purchased from Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC).
Power Factor: Minimum of 90% lagging.
Primary Voltage Service: Available upon request, with a $500 monthly minimum bill.
