On Oct. 15, the third annual Co-opreneur Day was held at the Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives in Oklahoma City. This seventh and eighth-grade competition was designed to develop and explore business development, economic, leadership and entrepreneurship skills. Students from Alva Middle School and Cherokee Junior High represented Alfalfa Electric.
This year’s challenge was to create a cooperative that addressed the ongoing shortages of school supplies throughout the year. The students designed a cooperative business, developed a business plan, and presented their ideas to a panel of judges. Their goal was to design an innovative, sustainable model that ensures all students can access the materials they need to succeed.
More than 100 students participated in this year’s event, and Cherokee Junior High walked away victorious winning first place. The Cherokee eighth-grade team included Kaylee Eckhardt, Aubree Hughes, Jordan Alvidrez, and Creed Patterson. Their teacher/sponsor was Gayla Failes.
